What is Brain Gym®?Brain Gym® is an educational, movement-based programme which uses simple movements designed to help integrate the information between the brain’s hemispheres, preparing the person with the physical skills they need to learn effectively. It can be used to improve a wide range of learning, attention and behaviour skills. Educational Kinesiology and Brain Gym are the result of many years of research into learning and brain function by an educationalist, Dr Paul Dennison PhD, from the United States. He originally created it to help children and adults with learning challenges for example dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD. He adapted movements from many disciplines to create an effective learning package Current research by Grace Archer and Buffy McClelland at a large UK Secondary School into the use of Brain Gym with 100 poor readers in year 8, has shown that group reading ages immediately after the end of the 3 month intervention improved on average by nearly 6 months above normal changes in this time period (i.e. baseline control group). The Brain Gym group was the only group to show statistically significant improvement immediately after end of programme - so neither the placebo movement control group nor the baseline control group improved reading age significantly. After a further 6 months without intervention, the Brain Gym group's reading ages improved yet further, to end up nearly 1 year better than the baseline control group's mean reading age.
